From December 22nd, 2014 through until January 4th, 2015 this site will be taking a Christmas and New Years break. We will resume publishing prayers for our MLA's on January 5th, 2015. However, that does not mean we will stop praying for our province and our MLA's during Christmas. Below you will find our Christmas prayer for you to pray and think about over the next 9 days.

On January 1st, 2015 we will be publishing a New Year prayer that we ask you to take to heart and pray. So while we are not doing business as usual, we are still praying. Please join us over the holidays to take a moment and think of this province, it's MLAs and it's residents. Pray that the Saviour would take residence in all our hearts. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Dear Lord. We thank you this Christmas that we again can look to the baby born in the manger. That you God took on human form and came and lived among us. As we look at the events of that first Christmas may we also be reminded that your journey on earth would last 33 years, and end in your death so that WE can all be forgiven. But death would not have ultimate victory, for three days later you took back your own life, and became the "first born among the dead."

As we enter Christmas, may it be a time for the MLAs of this province to truly experience you. May you comfort those who have lost a loved one this past year, and whose first Christmas without them will be a difficult one.

Lord, for this province, we pray a blessing upon all of its residents. May they come to the realization that you desire that they have peace , and that true peace only comes by having you in their lives. May you heal the brokenhearted, may the poor know your good news, may those who are blind be able to see, may those who are prisoners be shown the freedom in Jesus and may the oppressed be set free.

Lord this Christmas may your light shine through us and may the world see it. In Jesus Name, AMEN!

MLA: KELVIN GOERTZEN - STEINBACH

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the gift of living in our great nation. We pray for Kelvin Goertzen today and ask that by Your Holy Power, the decisions and laws the he makes and has influence in making are just and fair to all Manitobans. Father, I ask You to give him wisdom to make decisions that would strengthen and prosper our province and nation. We pray that you would bless Kelvin and his family and give him the strength to endure the schedule and pressures that are before him, in the Name of Jesus Christ,  Amen.

Born and raised in Steinbach, Kelvin has deep roots in South Eastern Manitoba. Whether helping out on his grandfather's farm in the Pansy/Grunthal area or volunteering at the Mennonite Museum in Steinbach, Kelvin's parents taught him the value of hard work.

Following his graduation from the Steinbach Regional Secondary School in 1987, Kelvin enrolled in the University of Manitoba, ultimately earning his Honours degree in Commerce and a Bachelor's degree in Law. During this time he paid his way through University working evenings and weekends at what was then Penner Foods.

Early on, Kelvin realized the importance of community involvement in building a successful and compassionate province. He has served as Vice-President of Southeast Helping Hands Food Bank and of the Steinbach Arts Council and has been a Director for several other organizations. Kelvin is currently a member of the Southeast Rotary Club which raises money for worthwhile local causes. In 2007, Kelvin received the HOPE (Helping Other People Everywhere) medal from the Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario Lions Foundation in recognition of his community volunteer activities.

In addition to working in a major financial institution and with a property development company, Kelvin worked for several years as the Executive Assistant to former Steinbach MLA's Albert Driedger and Jim Penner. He also served as the Special Assistant to the Deputy Minister of Culture, Heritage and Citizenship, and was the first Legislative Intern to be elected to the Manitoba Legislature.

In 2003, Kelvin became the youngest MLA ever elected in the Steinbach Constituency. In 2007, Kelvin was re-elected MLA for the Steinbach Constituency achieving 83% of the vote, the highest in the history of the riding.

Since his election to the Manitoba Legislature, he has served in several senior positions for the PC Caucus including Health Critic and Education Critic. Currently, Kelvin is the Justice Critic and House Leader for the Progressive Conservative Caucus.

In 2008, Kelvin graduated from the Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development (BILLD) which is conducted in Madison Wisconsin for emerging leaders in the midwest part of Canada and the United States.

Kelvin enjoys writing and has published several articles including in the Asper Review of International Business and Trade Law. In 2006 he published a book on the life of former Steinbach MLA, Jim Penner, entitled "A Life Well Lived."

In 1997, Kelvin married Kim Hiebert from New Bothwell and have one son Malachi who was born September 30, 2006. They have been members of Southland Community Church in Steinbach for the past 13 years.

MLA: HON. JON GERRARD - RIVER HEIGHTS

Heavenly Father we thank you for the Honorable member from River Heights, Jon Gerrard. He has a passion to serve his constituents. We ask that as he serves that there would come a deep conviction and awareness that you have place him in this role for a purpose that is bigger than himself. Reveal your love to him and give him the mercy and grace he needs to lead with your heart. In the name of Jesus we ask, Amen


Jon Gerrard’s diverse career offers a multitude of strengths to his leadership position. As a scientist and researcher, medicine has been a dominant thread in his career. Gerrard’s lifelong passion for politics encouraged a career change where yet again, he has daily opportunities to make a difference.
Jon was born in 1947. Dr. Gerrard obtained a BA in Economics from the University of Saskatchewan (1967), MD from McGill University, Montreal (1971), and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. In 1976, Dr. Gerrard received his Certificate in Pediatrics from the American Academy of Pediatrics. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Canada (pediatrics) in 1982.
Gerrard is an internationally recognized researcher and physician. He has a rich publication history that explores medicine, science and the environment. From 1985 – 1992, Gerrard led a multidisciplinary team in the care and treatment of Manitoba children with cancer as head of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg.
Jon Gerrard’s political career began when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Portage-Interlake. While on Parliament Hill his positions as Secretary of State for Science and Technology (1993 – 1997) and Western Economic Diversification (1996 – 1997) provided him with opportunities to promote research, technology, economic growth, job opportunities and a better future for Canadians. Dr. Gerrard made the switch to provincial politics in September of 1999, when he was elected MLA for River Heights.
Gerrard has been a strong voice for the Liberal perspective in the legislature. His unique perspective, creative problem solving skills, down to business approach and extraordinary work ethic make him an exceptional and responsive MLA.
A diverse background – including science and technology, health care and education, economics and the environment – is an invaluable resource to bring to the office of the leader. Jon’s understanding and experience of Manitoba’s rural and urban life and knowledge of politics and government management in cabinet and federal arenas set him apart.

MLA: DAVE GAUDREAU - ST NORBERT

Lord, may your hand of blessing and guidance be upon Mr. Dave Gaudreau in his service to the people of St. Norbert. His passion for health care and for dignity for seniors is a noble calling and may he be blessed with the fruit of success in these endeavours. We pray that your grace also guide Dave to success in the area of education for the children of our province. May his family know great peace and hope in the near future. Amen.

Dave was first elected MLA in October 2011 and is building on the progress made in St. Norbert under former NDP MLA Marilyn Brick.  With his energy and community connections, Gaudreau is  providing strong representation for the families of St. Norbert as your newly elected NDP MLA in Premier Greg Selinger’s government.
A journeyman welder by trade, Dave completed his apprenticeship program at Keewatin Community College in The Pas (now University College of the North) where he graduated as apprentice of the year. He most recently worked for the City of Winnipeg and completed a program in industrial supervision at Red River College.
Dave and has been active in the labour movement and has been an active volunteer who has organized fundraising events for Osborne House and W.I.S.H., an organization in St. Norbert that provides housing and supports to women and children affected by domestic violence.
As a parent, Dave knows how important a high-quality education is to children and their families in St. Norbert.  Dave is a passionate defender of our health care system and believes we must keep recruiting and training doctors and nurses and continue to invest in our health facilities for the future.  He also recently started working on a campaign to improve Canada's pension system to ensure seniors can retire with dignity rather than live in poverty.

MLA: CAMERON FRIESEN - MORDEN-WINKLER

Father, we thank you for MLA Cameron Friesen
and the experience he has had in the public sector. Thank you for his efforts to seek to improve the quality of life for our Manitobans. Continue to encourage Cameron as he seeks to bring about changes that are important to him. May hevalso find the time to be revitalized and refreshed by his relationship with family and friends. After being elected as MLA for Morden—Winkler, Cameron assumed the role of Critic for Education.  Under the new PC Leader Brian Pallister, Cameron moves to the role of Health Critic. 

Cameron was previously Executive Assistant to the Member of Parliament for Portage—Lisgar, working with local stakeholders to enhance and grow the Morden—Winkler region. He was liaison to local government, business and industry, and resolved issues for employees and employers, new Canadians, seniors, community organizations and farmers.

Cameron’s twelve-year teaching career included positions in Winnipeg, Steinbach and Morden school divisions. He built solid programs through a commitment to fundamentals like measurable outcomes and meaningful assessment of learners, gaining the respect of students, peers and the community, and earning a reputation as a hardworking educator and advocate for music education in the public school system.

Cameron is dedicated to life-long learning; he holds degrees from CMBC, University of British Columbia and University of Manitoba and has completed courses in the management and administration program at University of Winnipeg.

Cameron was born and raised in Morden. He and Shelley have been married for 20 years. Their love of the area and commitment to community and family brought them back home ten years ago, where they are now proudly raising their three children.

MLA: WAYNE EWASKO - LAC DU BONNET

Lord, we pray for MLA Wayne Ewasko - for wisdom, grace and patience as he serves the province of Manitoba. May God bless Wayne and his family.

Wayne has grown up in the Brokenhead area on a small farm South West of Beausejour. He graduated from Edward Schreyer School in Beausejour, went on to the University of Manitoba and obtained his Bach. Of Education degree, Post Baccalaureate degree in Education and is currently working towards his Masters.  

Wayne married his Highschool sweetheart Tracey and they have two wonderful sons, Brayden and Jarvis.  

Wayne has owned a business for 24 years and has been teaching for the past 15 years in Sunrise School Division where he is currently a Guidance Counsellor. He has earned many professional Certificates over the past several years, Manitoba Emergency Evacuation Certificate as well as the Assist Suicide Prevention Training to name a couple. Wayne also received the Teacher of Distinction Award from Brandon University in 2008

HE has volunteered on many Divisional, Provincial and community committees/organizations. He has served as the President of the Beausejour Curling Club, PD Chair for the Agassiz School Division, Public Relations Chair for the Community Resource Center Network for Change, Youth Director for the Beausejour Knights of Columbus for the past 8 years organizing many youth activities within the area.

Wayne has supported the development of grassroots learning initiatives in our community. The Edward Schreyer Credit Union which was the second ever school run financial institution in Manitoba & still stands as a model for other schools. ESS also has the first ever Curling Academy Curricula in Manitoba that Wayne played an integral part in its’ development and inception with partnerships with Curl Manitoba and the Beausejour Curling Club. The 2010/11 school year saw 70 students study curling because of this initiative and partnership.

He had coached many local sport teams over the years; Curling, Hockey, Baseball, Soccer and Lacrosse.

Wayne’s hobbies and interests include; curling, golf, swimming, fishing, camping and spending time with his family and friends.

MLA: RALPH EICHLER - LAKESIDE

Father, You guide and govern everything with order and love. Today as we pray for our political leaders we ask that you would look upon Ralph Eichler and fill him with your spirit of discernment and wisdom. Father, may Ralph always act in accordance with Your will and may his decisions be for the well-being and peace of all Manitobans. We pray a blessing on Ralph’s family and those closest to him, as they support Ralph in all the responsibilities that he must upon and may Your peace be upon him in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. 

Ralph was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in June, 2003.

He is a long time resident of the Lakeside area with strong ties to the community and local businesses.

Ralph believes that building a healthy and sustainable rural economy is essential. He foresees future prosperity in Lakeside with a thriving agricultural economy, expanding tourist industry and improved infrastructure.

For eight years, Ralph served as the Administrator of the Interlake School Division and remains committed to building opportunities for youth. He believes that with strong leadership, accountability and vision, we will see community growth and stability in Manitoba.

Ralph’s dedication to the people of the Lakeside constituency is instantly recognizable by his continual involvement in community service. He volunteers his time to many community organizations in various capacities.

He was an active member of a variety of organizations including the Teulon and Area Lions Club and the Stonewall Royal Canadian Legion Branch 52. Ralph and his family are active members of their local church.

In the past, Ralph served as Board Director of the Prairie Implements Manufacturers’ Association (PIMA), Board Chairman of Neicom Developments, an original Director of the Teulon Green Acres Park Board, President of the Interlake Riding Club, supporter of the Handivan Committee, Treasurer of the Teulon Kinsmen Club, member of the Interlake Community Foundation Board and Treasurer of the Teulon Golf and Country Club.

Ralph understands the struggles of livestock producers, having raised both purebred Simmentals and a commercial herd. He is the past owner/operator of Prairie Farm and Ranch Supply, a major manufacturer and importer/exporter of livestock handling equipment. While a business owner, he successfully initiated the global marketing of an innovative Manitoba agricultural invention called “The Stockdoctor”. He currently owns Ray’s Auction Service.

Ralph was elected, by his peers, on January 16, 2010 as a Director to the State Agriculture Rural Leaders (SARL) Board representing Canada, USA and Mexico. Ralph attends, on a regular basis, the Legislative Agriculture Chairs Summit. Here, he works together with senior US state agriculture legislators, Canadian provincial Ministers, and elected officials to discuss and develop agriculture policy and to exchange best practices.

Ralph and his wife Gail have two sons, a daughter and son-in-law, and three grandchildren.

MLA: MYRNA DRIEDGER - CHARLESWOOD

God, our Heavenly Father, we ask for your Spirit to fill and fulfill our MLA from Charleswood, Myrna Driedger. We thank you for her willingness to represent the interests of her constituents. Grant Myrna physical strength and spiritual insight so the fruit of her work will make an eternal difference in the lives of those she serves. We ask this in and through the matchless name of Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Myrna’s path in life is rooted in her strong desire to make a difference. Having served as a nurse, a leader in the area of missing and exploited children, and as an elected Member of the Legislative Assembly in Manitoba, Myrna’s many roles have reflected this calling to help make her community a better place.

Myrna is currently the Health Critic of the PC Party of Manitoba as well as the Critic for the Status of Women. She has also held a number of diverse critic roles in the past including that of Deputy Leader, Critic for Finance, Child & Family Services, and Education. During her time in government, she was the Legislative Assistant to the Minister of Health.

In 2011, Myrna was elected Chair of the Canadian Region of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) by her peers from across the country. In September, 2012, Myrna was also elected the Vice-Chair CWP International. CWP works for better representation of women in legislatures throughout Canada and the Commonwealth.

Before entering public life, Myrna had a successful and rewarding career as a registered nurse with experience in general duty, nursing education, medical and nursing research, patient education, and nursing administration. Her nursing experience has led her to have a passionate voice for a better health care system.

As President and Executive Director of Child Find Manitoba, Myrna was a leading advocate for the protection of children. Her fierce determination and leadership were the driving force behind the early development of Child Find Manitoba, which is now recognized across Canada as a central player in child protection issues.

Myrna’s professional achievements have earned her recognition on the “Canadian Who’s Who” list as well as the “Who’s Who of Canadian Women”. For service to her community, Myrna was presented the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal.

Not afraid to take on a challenge, Myrna is a strong voice for health, education, justice, and economic issues, and is a champion of youth, seniors’ and women’s issues. Her persistence, as well as her strong belief in the power and ability of women, led to the establishment of the Nellie McClung Foundation and the memorial on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislature.

Myrna and her husband, Hal live in Charleswood with their two sons, Rhys and Curtis. She enjoys cooking, gardening, photography, and the occasional round of golf.

MLA: HON. GREG DEWAR - SELKIRK

Lord, we give thanks for the service and commitment of Hon. Greg Dewar as he offers himself in service to the great people of Selkirk and to the people of province of Manitoba. We ask for Your grace and peace to be upon Greg's family as he carries out his responsibilities in fiscal management, the civil service, crown corporations and with the review of the accountably act. Greg Dewar brings a wide range of experience to the table. He was born in Selkirk and raised in Cloverdale, in a farming family. He has worked on the family farm, as a steelworker and as a businessman in Selkirk. He is the grandson of Ben Massey, a past mayor of Selkirk. Greg has a BA in history.
Greg was elected as the MLA for the Selkirk in 1990 and was re-elected in 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007. He has served as the government whip and has been a member of the caucus executive, the House Strategy committee and the Legislative Assembly Management Committee. In November 2009 Premier Selinger appointed him the Legislative Assistant to the Minister of Finance. He is also Vice-Chair of the Public Accounts Committee.

MLA: CLIFF CULLEN - SPRUCE WOODS * DEPUTY HOUSE LEADER, PC CRITIC FOR HEALTHY LIVING, SENIORS AND CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND THE LIQUOR CONTROL ACT

Cliff is the Caucus representative for the Manitoba Legislative Internship Program.

Cliff Cullen was born and raised on a grain and cattle farm near Wawanesa and graduated from the University of Manitoba with a diploma in agriculture. He was first elected MLA for Spruce Woods in 2004 and was re-elected in 2007 and 2011. 

He has been involved in his community for many years, serving as captain of the volunteer fire department and volunteering on various community boards such as the Glenboro Community Development Corporation, Community Round Table, Glenboro Curling Club and the Glenboro United Church.

Cliff is an ardent activist for the environment. He has held the position of president of the Manitoba Weed Supervisors Association and the provincial manager of the Association for a Clean Rural Environment.

Cliff and his wife Marilyn, a Grade 5 & 6 teacher at the Glenboro School, have three sons: Braydon, Addison and Colby. 

 

MLA: HON. DEANNE CROTHERS - ST JAMES

We ask for encouragement and wisdom for Hon. Deanne Crothers as she serves the people of Manitoba. May God bless Deanne with patience as she makes difficult decisions each day. We ask this in the name of Jesus - Amen.

First elected in October 2011, Deanne brings to the legislature a passion for making St. James an even better, more affordable place for families. As the new MLA for St. James, she looks forward to working as part of Greg Selinger’s team to keep providing the community with hard working and effective NDP representation.
Deanne is a teacher who appreciates the importance of education to today’s families and communities. She specializes in literacy and English as an additional language. For the past five years, she has worked with adults who have lost their jobs to improve their literacy skills before re-entering the job market. Prior to this, she worked as an adult literacy instructor to help them obtain their GED diplomas while improving their reading, writing and math skills.
Deanne’s volunteer activities include helping women new to Canada by teaching English and helping them adjust to life in Manitoba.

MLA: HON. DAVE CHOMIAK - KILDONAN

Almighty and eternal God, You know the longings of people's hearts,
 and You protect their rights. In Your goodness, watch over those who have been elected and placed in authority over us. Father, I pray specifically for Hon. David Chomiak that as he governs and guides that he will be filled with wisdom and discernment in his daily duties. I pray this so that the people of Manitoba may enjoy freedom, security, and peace. Dave Chomiak was born in Winnipeg's North End and resides in the West Kildonan area.
He has been the MLA for Kildonan since 1990. Most recently, he was appointed the Minister of Mineral Resources by Premier Greg Selinger on October 18, 2013.
Prior to that Mr. Chomiak was a lawyer in private practice. He also served as Executive Assistant to former premier Ed Schreyer.
Dave Chomiak has served on the boards of the Hoosli Ukrainian Male Choir, Ed Schreyer's Canadian Shield Foundation, and the Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre. He has been active in the Rusalka Dance Ensemble and the Big Brothers Association of Manitoba.
While in Opposition, Mr. Chomiak served as the New Democratic Party Critic for Health and the Critic for Education and Justice. As part of the Doer government he served as Minister of Health from 1999 to 2004, when he was appointed to the Energy, Science and Technology portfolio. In 2006, he was named Minister of Justice and Attorney General. He worked in this post until 2009. Then Premier Selinger appointed Mr. Chomiak the Minister of Innovation, Energy, and Mines, where he served for four years.

MLA: STUART BRIESE - AGASSIZ * MANITOBA PC CRITIC FOR ABORIGINAL AND NORTHERN AFFAIRS, ABORIGINAL EDUCATION AND COMMUNITIES ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FUND ACT

Dear Lord, please bless our MLA Stu Briese as he works for his constituents in Agassiz and the people of Manitoba. Please give Stu wisdom as he navigates the challenges of making wise choices within his sphere of influence. Bless and protect him and his family. Thank you, Lord. Amen.

Stu has been the MLA for Ste. Rose since May 2007 and will be the Progressive Conservative candidate for the new Agassiz Constituency in the October 4, 2011 provincial Election.
Stu has four grown children and one grandchild. He owned and operated a mixed farm in the Neepawa area for many years.
Stu served on the RM of Langford council for 20 years and served as director, vice president and president of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities. He also served three years as a director on the board of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
Stu has been critic for Family Services and the critic for Local Government and Emergency Measures Organization. He has also served as critic for Advanced Education. Stu is also Deputy Caucus Chair.

MLA: HON. KEVIN CHIEF - POINT DOUGLAS

Father God, in the name of Jesus, we intercede on behalf of Hon. Kevin Chief. You have placed in his hands the responsibility of the welfare of peoples well being and sense of well being. The gifts and abilities he has, though great, are not sufficient for the success of the portfolio. He needs the help of Holy Spirit to bring righteousness to the forefront of his department. Give him the awareness that he needs you and your willingness to lead him. In the name of Jesus Christ we ask, Amen.

Kevin is a proud life-long resident of Winnipeg’s North End and was elected Member of the Legislative Assembly for Point Douglas on October 4, 2011. He was appointed Minister of Children and Youth Opportunities in 2012, and Minister responsible for the City of Winnipeg by Premier Greg Selinger on October 18, 2013.
Kevin attended Strathcona Elementary School, Isaac Newton Junior High and Tec Voc High School. He graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a Bachelor Degree with a major in Justice and Law Enforcement and a minor in Physical Activity and Sport Study. He is currently working on his Masters of Education.
Kevin is a dedicated and dynamic community leader, involved with numerous boards and committees from local to national levels. He is also a sought-after speaker on the topic of the importance of education and leadership development for youth. He received the Manitoba Premier’s Volunteer Service Award in 2009 and was awarded the Future Leaders of Manitoba Award for Community Service in 2010. He is also a recipient of the Manitoba Hydro Spirit of the Earth Award.
Kevin has held many professional positions in the areas of youth development and education, including Coordinator of the Innovative Learning Centre at the University of Winnipeg, Director of the Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre and Community Networker with the River East Transcona School Division. He has served as a board and committee member for many local and national organizations.
An accomplished athlete, Kevin is a two-time First Team Great Canadian Athletic Conference All Star and a three-time member of the All Manitoba Team for the Manitoba High School Athletic Association. An active member of a square dance troupe, Kevin regularly performs throughout Manitoba.
Kevin and his wife Melanie were married in July 2009. They are raising their son Hayden, born in 2010, in the Point Douglas area.

Drew is a strong representative for Brandon, working for improved health care, great schools, affordable housing and more opportunities for young people. He has served as Minister of Education, Training and Youth, and Minister of Family Services and Housing. He is currently the legislative assistant to Premier Greg Selinger.
Before his election to the Manitoba Legislature, Drew was a three-term city councilor for the historic downtown Rosser Ward in Brandon. He was first elected to Brandon City Council in 1992, re-elected in 1995 and acclaimed in 1998. He was a founding director of the Brandon Regional Health Authority. Drew also served elected terms on the Board of Directors of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities, the Manitoba Association of Urban Municipalities and the Union of Manitoba Municipalities.

Erna was first elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Rossmere in 2007. She was appointed Minister of Labour and Immigration by Premier Greg Selinger on October 18, 2013.
A long-time resident of North Kildonan, Erna attended Springfield Heights School and River East Collegiate. The North Kildonan Community Club was a centre of activity where Erna played on the girls’ softball team, attended many teen dances and skated on the ice rinks in the winter.
Erna attended the University of Manitoba where she received a Bachelor of Home Economics. In her final year, she worked with a women’s community group helping them learn to sew for their children. This sparked an interest in teaching and she enrolled in the Faculty of Education, where she earned her Teaching Certificate, followed by a Bachelor of Education.
Erna’s teaching career has spanned 34 years, with 31 spent in the Winnipeg School Division. Erna has taught Home Economics – Clothing, Child Development, Family Studies and Nutrition. Her last teaching assignment was at the Adolescent Parent Centre, an alternative program in which young mothers are able to complete their high school education.
An active member of the teaching profession, she served on the executives of the Manitoba Home Economics Teachers’ Association and The Winnipeg Teachers’ Association (WTA). Erna was elected WTA President in 1989-90 and 2005-2007. She also served on the Provincial Executive of The Manitoba Teachers’ Society during the late 1990s. Erna was also recognized for her work on curriculum and was seconded for three years in the mid-1990s to the Department of Education as Curriculum Consultant for Home Economics and Skills for Independent Living.
Erna is a member of the First Mennonite Church. She has had a long-standing commitment to her church, having been a Sunday School teacher in the past. Currently, Erna is a member of the women’s group “Evergreen Circle” as well as the Ministerial Council as Head Deacon.
Erna served as NDP caucus chair from June 2008 until 2011. She also chaired the Special Committee for Senate Reform of the Legislative Assembly.
